Weekend Capers

Flynn loves the water and he's been spending more and more time in the condo pool downstairs. Unfortunately he loves it so much that his latest trick is to scoop a good handful and drink it.

He's starting baby swimming lessons this week, which is really just about having fun in the water.










We had a public holiday a week or so ago and we spent it at The Singapore Zoo - it was quite good but half of Singapore had the same idea so it was pretty busy.

Flynn was not overly impressed with the animals and was more interested in grabbing the umbrella for a quick chew (see the Siberian Tiger on the rock in the background - he loves the Singapore heat apparently).

A Month of Firsts

First Mothers' Day!

This May it was great to celebrate my first mothers' day! It was a culinary fiesta - Blake made blueberry and banana pancakes for breakfast, we had fresh salmon for lunch and Blake's signature eye fillet dish (with roasted vegetables and a red wine reduction) for dinner.

We were going to go out for dinner originally but it was a busy day so we deferred the dinner out until Thurs (tonight), when we went out to a seaside restaurant on the East Coast and had chilli crab - a Singaporean specialty. It was delicious but very, very messy (you eat it with your hands). I even managed to get some on my forehead.

In other news...

Flynn's getting ready for crawling!

He can do a kind of shuffle, backwards and forwards and can turn 360 too. So now we have to watch him like a hawk - no more leaving him on the bed for a couple hours while at the gym ;)

First Haircut:
Yes Flynn recently has his first haircut - the front lock was nearly in his eyes! I had a go at the front and back and it looks passable, but definitely has a 'homemade' feel to it. Blake was disappointed that Flynn's mullet has now gone but we've agreed that he can grow it back if we move to Nelson.

First Time in a Highchair!
We will soon be giving Flynn his first solids! Obviously the little lad will require his own chair for mealtimes, so we've got the new highchair ready and waiting and Flynn took it for a test drive (sans food) the other day.

His initial reaction was not overwhelmingly positive. He was not impressed, especially with the straps - he's not one for being restrained.

Out for brunch:
We often go to a local organic cafe. It does great food and it's just round the corner. Flynn is pretty good at such outings as long as he can be out of the pram and part of the action.

First time using washable nappies! Flynn mentioned that we should try to reduce our negative impact on the environment and give washable nappies a go. What do ya reckon Flynn?

Actually they are easy to use (made in the shape of disposables) and made of special absorbant microfibre stuff - but they are not as good (or convenient) as disposables. They need changing more frequently, the skin feels wetter and baby clothes will not go over them (too bulky). Obviously baby clothes makers assume everyone uses disposables - and they're about right 95% of the time. So we're going to use the ones we've bought at home sometimes, but they're just not practical to use most of the time as we are always out and about. I am disappointed that there are not effective, affordable and widely available biodegradable nappies here.

In any case, Flynn got over his intial impressions and was soon playing happily.

Nothing too exciting to report over the past two weeks but Flynn keeps giving us plenty of photo opportunities, and i keep taking them - so it's about time for a blog.

 

Flynn is doing a kind of pre-crawl thing at the moment, where he lies on his front and pushes his bum into the air, then pushes himself forward with his feet. He can't get far and usually only does it when he's mad!
 

He's a very happy camper at the moment though (the teething has gone on the backburner) and he's fallen into a great routine of three day-sleeps each day (hopefully it's not just a phase). He's playing quite vigourously now, so I guess it's tiring him out more.

At the end of the day it's bath time and dad usually does the honours. Flynn LOVES his bath and never fails to get extremely excited at the prospect. He's growing out of his baby bath though and will soon have to graduate to the grown-up one!

You'll notice that there are mostly only photos of Flynn and Blake - I'm trying to encourage Blake to take more photos of me and the little fella so that Flynn doesn't think he was raised single-handedly by his dad (how ironic), but Blake prefers to be in front of the camera methinks.

Blake went to the dawn service for ANZAC day, here in Singapore. They have a service out at Kranji where many NZ and Oz soldiers lost their lives.



There were apparently about 500 expat Australasians out there for the service.

Coming up:
We getting excited at thought of our visitors over the next three months.

First we have auntie Lisa coming this month, then in July we have Grandma, auntie Bec and family, and Neisha and Brett in August - Yay!
