Fasnacht 2013

To jump back to Feb, Fasnacht was once again an amazing experience this year!

I have never seen anything like these three-days of celebrations, parades, dressing up, and festivities! The fun actually starts weeks ahead of the main three days, with all the small villages in Basel (and other parts of Switzerland and Germany) having their own Fasnacht parades.

In Muttenz, the kindy and primary school kids dress up in themes and are part of the Muttenz parade. Flynn was stoked to be a part of that with his kindy this year.

It was a cold day (it's been a long cold winter) but the turnout is still great

Due to the cold, Benjy struggled to maintain his enthusiasm - and he really lost the plot by the end

But not to worry, there were plenty more opportunities to join the fun. Here are some shots from the main three-day event in Basel city. The festival runs for three days and nights - 24 hours a day!

The Waggis (the ones dressed up with grotesque faces and big hair) throw confetti and sweets at the crowd. They also shove handfuls down your back if you're not careful. The boys absolutely love the parades because they come away with big bags of lollies!

Once again it was totally freezing, but with coffee and beers stalls all around, we managed to get by!

Unfortunately some of the children do get taken by the Waggis

There are friendly-looking masks

And scary-looking masks

Kids weren't worried though - they just loved the lolly-scrambles!

Monsters and Superheros

The boys were super-excited when an unexpected parcel arrived in the post the other day... It turned out to be two fantastic costumes from Uncle Shauny!

They were beside themselves when they saw what the costumes were!

Superman immediately tested out his new flying ability

While Benjy had a think about what small animals he might like to eat now

Then he showed his terrible claws

Tried out his fearsome growl

Then let rip with his scary roar!

Having terrified all the animals in the deep, dark wood, he found himself a nice fat sheep for lunch

Meanwhile Flynn perfected his superhero smile - while keeping watch for baddies of course.
